Financial Controller - Sydney

An opportunity has opened for a competent, “hands on” and detail-focused Financial Controller to join the Potentiate team.  This role will have the primary responsibility of taking ownership for the Finance function and leading the Accounts Officer to deliver on all financial forecasting/budgeting, accounting, cashflow management and reporting across the business.

Reporting to the Global CEO, this role will work in partnership with the Directors, General Manager and other senior management roles; requiring someone with strong commercial and operational skills and a demonstrated ability of leading and developing a finance function.

This role will challenge you to “lead from the front”, engaging with internal and external stakeholders as you support all financial aspects of the business.  Offering you a fast-paced, agile environment, this role gives you the opportunity to use your expertise to deliver high quality, accurate work in a timely and predictable manner.

The Role

Joining a team of 40+ staff located across Australia and overseas, your key responsibilities will be:


• Deliver strategic leadership and partnering with the Senior Leadership Team to define the commercial path of revenue growth and profitability for Potentiate
• Manage, lead and coach direct reports, building team capabilities
• Develop collaborative working relationships across the business
• Ensure the finance function is continuously improving through strong processes, systems, policies, procedures and reporting
• Drive a high energy, innovative, customer centric and value adding culture across the business, acting as a role model of strong leadership


• Lead budgeting and forecasting with key internal stakeholders (annually, quarterly, monthly)
• Manage business cashflow on a daily basis
• Ensure timely and accurate production of financial and management reports, including presenting these for the Senior Leadership Team and Board
• Supporting the CEO, GM and other senior leaders in undertaking analysis for key business decisions (e.g. pricing, strategic partnerships)
• Oversee all transactional finance processes such as payroll, accounts receivable and accounts payable
• Provide any other ad hoc financial support or advice as required


• Identify and report on key risks for the business (financial and non-financial)
• Manage relationship with external auditors


• Provide leadership for all legal aspects of the business
• Manage relationships with any external legal service providers


• Preparation of BAS, PAYG, Worker Compensation, payroll tax and other tax related tasks
• Manage relationships with any external tax/accounting service providers

Essential attributes and experience

• Authentic, modest yet highly driven and capable individual

• Strong leadership and communication skills with a willingness to lead an outcome
• Outstanding financial and general management expertise
• Strong analytical and negotiation ability
• 5-10 years of experience in a finance function, with at least 3-5 years leading
• Ability to think creatively and develop non-traditional solutions to complex business challenges
• Natural numerical literacy
• Strict attention to detail
• Naturally logical, sequential and systematic thinker
• Quick learner who can easily adapt to changing situations
• Ability to work autonomously, self-manage workload and seek support where needed
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Outlook
• Xero and Employment Hero experience highly regarded


• Hold a relevant undergraduate university degree
• Professional accreditation in accounting/finance
• Further postgraduate study highly regarded
